A woman dragged from her car by a unknown man and assaulted is so traumatised by the ordeal she does not want to leave her home, police say.
Officers are hunting for the suspected culprit who injured a Melbourne woman after trying to steal her Maserati SUV about 6pm on August 2.
The man is believed to have waited for the woman before pulling her from the car on Atherton Road at Oakleigh, before hitting her.
The woman escaped and received a cut to the back of her head, which was treated at hospital.
It was terrifying for the victim but she was "extremely lucky" to have escaped, Victoria Police Detective Sergeant Steve Kirwan said.
"She is still extremely traumatised, she's not wanting to go out in public," he told reporters on Friday.
The woman is now at home and police have liaised with her and her family to ensure she is supported.
Witnesses to the carjacking tried to stop the man from taking the vehicle but he ran towards Atkinson Street.
A 40-year-old male witness received a minor injury and was treated at the scene.
It appeared to be a random incident and the man was not armed, Det Sgt Kirwan said.
The offender was last seen wearing a black coat, dark pants and black runners, police said.
Police urge anyone with information on the man to contact them and asked the public not to approach him, but to instead call triple zero.
