Three people are in hospital, two of them critically wounded, after a targeted shooting in Sydney's southwest.
Police were called to Mayvic Street in Greenacre about 2.15am on Sunday after reports a man and a woman in one parked car and a second man in another had been injured.
The female, aged 19, remains in a stable condition in St George Hospital after being struck by gunfire in the chest.
The two males, 22 and 25, are fighting for life, with wounds to the head and neck. The younger man is in St George Hospital, while the 25-year-old is in Liverpool Hospital.
Police say the Toyota sedan and Mazda hatchback the three were sitting in were about 50 metres apart on the same side of the street.
A third car was found alight in Amy Street at nearby Regents Park about five minutes after the attack.
Detectives are yet to determine whether the woundings are linked to the car fire, which resulted in flames spreading to a wooden fence and tree. Fire and Rescue NSW extinguished the blaze.
Police from Auburn declared two crime scenes and are investigating the incidents with assistance from the State Crime Command.
They are yet to say whether or not they suspect the attack is gang-related or if a lone gunman or several suspects are on the run. However it's understood they believe the assault was targeted.
"Terrible behaviour. It's a very serious offence, people shooting at people," Superintendent Simon Glasser told reporters at Greenacre.
"It could have resulted in a death at this stage and it still may. We're treating it at its highest, we've put all of our resources on it.
“We haven’t found any direct information to attribute (the shooting) to any ongoing conflicts at the moment,” he added
“We’re trying to establish what both parties were doing at the location.”
Anyone with information about the shootings or who was in either area between 2am and 2.30am has been urged to come forward.
