Beaches closed after suspected great white shark attack

A man is in hospital with a nasty thigh wound following a suspected great white shark attack at a popular surf spot in Western Australia.

Fisheries officials are investigating the reported shark bite to a man in his 20s at 8.45am on Monday near Gnarabup Beach in Margaret River.

A white shark was seen in the area about 20 minutes later.

WA Country Health confirmed it was caring for a patient with a suspected shark bite, and said he was in a stable condition.

Swimmers and surfers have been warned to take extra caution in the Gnarabup and Prevelly area.

The Shire of Augusta Margaret River has closed all beaches from Gas Bay to Margaret River Mouth Beach until further notice.

A shark advice alert urging extra caution was issued two days ago when a whale carcass was spotted about 60km away at Cape Naturaliste.
