A 25-year-old man accused of murdering a 10-month-old boy has yet to enter a plea, with his lawyer saying they were awaiting a large amount of information from prosecutors.

The boy died in early December after being taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital from a home at Warrane in the city's eastern suburbs.

Daniel John Ridgers was originally charged with causing grievous bodily harm - charges were upgraded to include murder after the boy's death.

Ridgers briefly appeared on Friday via video link in Hobart Magistrates Court with his lawyer Pip Monk applying for an adjournment without plea.

Ms Monk said she was awaiting a "large amount of material " to be disclosed by prosecutors, including quite complex hospital records.

Magistrate Michael Daly granted the adjournment and remanded Ridgers in custody to next appear in court on February 5.

The mother of the boy was present in court.
