Glory daze: No owner, no coach and now no Ryan Williams

The upheaval at Perth Glory goes on, with former Socceroos forward Ryan Williams and defender Jordan Elsey announcing their departures from the A-League Men club.

Less than a week after Glory owner Tony Sage handed back the club's licence amid ongoing financial woes, Williams and Elsey have been released to take up playing opportunities in India.

Williams, who joined the club from English side Oxford United in 2022, had two seasons to run on his initial three-year contract.

Elsey was also on the books for two more campaigns, having joined Glory from the Newcastle Jets midway through last season.

With mentor Ruben Zadkovich parting ways with the club in June, it means Glory now have no owner, no coach, and a roster that is losing players.

The Perth club were placed into receivership last week amid ongoing financial troubles, with advisory firm KordaMentha appointed to manage the process.

Sage, who estimates he poured close to $50 million into the club during his 16-year stint at the helm, said he had previously come close to finding a buyer.

The Australian Professional Leagues have now taken over that task, with hopes a new owner will be in place before the start of the ALM season in October.

Williams only scored four goals from 24 games last season but played a key role in keeping a Perth side packed with young players in the finals hunt right to the end.

Elsey notched 10 games for Glory.

“The club is currently managing a complex and abnormal set of circumstances and the decision to have these two senior players depart was a very difficult one," Glory chief executive Anthony Radich said.

"But we understand their desire to take up the option of very lucrative offers in Asia and wish them all the very best for the future.

“We will now take the opportunity to reinforce our squad under the direction of our new head coach, whom we expect to appoint in the very near future.”

Former Matildas and Central Coast Mariners mentor Alen Stajcic is the early frontrunner to be appointed Glory coach following Zadkovich's abrupt departure.

Stajcic is currently in charge of the Philippines at the Women's World Cup.
